Mikania: Introduction

Mikania micrantha, sometimes referred to as ‘mile-a-minute’ weed, is a many-branched perennial vine native to the neotropics. Mikania was first discovered in Florida in 2009 near Homestead, and because of its status as a serious terrestiral invasive plant in many areas of Asia, there is concern that it may pose a similar threat to Florida’s natural and agricultural ecosystems.

Ongoing Activities

  • A feasibiltiy study was conducted to determine the potential for biological control of Mikania in Florida.
  • The insect herbivores of Mikania micrantha and two native Mikania species were catalogued to determine whether local natural enemies have expanded their host ranges to include the exotic species.
